Volta Region, Ghana — The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has announced plans to introduce a new paragliding project in the Volta Region. This initiative, described as both ambitious and transformative, is being led by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Mr. Ekow Sampson.
A team of experts, including a professional paragliding pilot, recently visited the region to assess suitable locations for the launch of the event. The site inspection marks a major step forward in the GTA’s effort to expand adventure tourism in Ghana.
The team was welcomed by Mr. Daniel Dzegede, Executive Director of the Volta Development Forum (VDF), who expressed strong support for the project. He noted that the initiative could greatly enhance the region’s tourism appeal.
The assessment focused on three main sites: Likpe, Amedzofe, and the Adaklu mountains. These locations were chosen for their natural beauty and potential to host a paragliding event similar to the well-known Kwahu Paragliding Festival held in the Eastern Region.
According to Mr. Sampson, the project is designed to unlock the Volta Region’s untapped tourism potential. “We believe this paragliding project will promote cultural exchange and help drive sustainable development in the community,” he said.
The economic impact is also expected to be significant. The event is likely to attract tourists and increase demand for local services such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation. This, in turn, could create new jobs and support small businesses in the region.
Mr. Dzegede and Dr. Stanley Glatey, Vice President of the VDF Tourism Committee, have both pledged their full support for the initiative. They assured the GTA team that the VDF will work closely with local and national authorities to ensure the project’s success.
While the team acknowledged existing challenges, such as poor road infrastructure, they stressed their commitment to working together to address these issues. Improving access to the selected locations is considered a key part of the project’s long-term success.
Likpe has emerged as a particularly promising site and may serve as the primary location for the first paragliding event. Organizers are currently considering December as a potential date for the maiden flight.
