Johannesburg, South Africa (02 July 2024) – As the world gears up for the Paris Olympics, Lauren Mukheibir of Sandton, Johannesburg, is preparing to represent South Africa in sport climbing. Having trained diligently for the past 22 months, Mukheibir is set to compete in both the Boulder and Lead categories, scheduled from August 6th to 8th, 2024.
Mukheibir, the reigning female African Champion in sport climbing, boasts 14 years of experience in the sport. Despite her impressive credentials, she faces the significant challenge of self-funding her journey to the Olympics. Like many athletes in South Africa, she has turned to crowdfunding to raise the necessary funds.
“If I secure the funding, I will compete in both Boulder and Lead categories,” Mukheibir explains. The Lead category involves scaling a 16-meter-high wall with a route worth 100 points, while the Boulder category features four boulders, each valued at 25 points. The combined scores from both events will determine the final placements out of a total of 200 points.
Mukheibir’s rigorous training regimen includes 20 hours a week, split equally between climbing and strength training. “Climbing at such a high level requires a lot of confidence and bravery,” she notes.
To reach the Olympics, Mukheibir must cover expenses for training sessions, physiotherapy, medical consultations, equipment, and travel. While her parents have been immensely supportive, their help can only stretch so far. “Funding everything myself is daunting. I’m handling the expenses for the Innsbruck World Cup without any support from government or national bodies. The financial strain from constant travelling can be overwhelming at times,” she admits. Mukheibir is profoundly thankful for her parents’ unwavering emotional, physical, and financial support.
“Climbing has influenced my life in countless ways, keeping me happy and giving me a purpose, especially during the COVID months. Representing South Africa in Paris is an immense honour and a testament to the hard work I’ve put in to achieve my dreams,” she reflects.
To date, Mukheibir has raised R21,000 towards her R200,000 goal, thanks to 16 generous donors. She expresses deep gratitude for every contribution, no matter the size, as each donation significantly aids her Olympic preparations. “A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Your support has funded numerous training sessions in Perth and several physiotherapy appointments,” she says.
