Sequoia National Park Announces Rock Climbing Closures to Protect Nesting Peregrine Falcons

April 2, 2025 – Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks have implemented their annual climbing closures to protect peregrine falcons during their nesting season. The closures, which affect Moro and Chimney Rocks, will remain in effect from April 1 through August 15, 2025.

These measures are crucial for safeguarding the falcons, as they are highly sensitive to human activity in their nesting areas. Disturbance can lead to nest abandonment, endangering both the eggs and the young birds. To monitor the situation, park officials are keeping track of nesting sites and gathering information on the birds’ activity.

The closures are subject to change depending on the current status of the nests. Once the nesting season concludes or the falcons have vacated the area, the closures will be lifted. Notices will be posted on bulletin boards in the area, indicating which parts of the rocks are open for rock climbing.
