Federica Brignone of Italy added another World Cup title to her collection on Tuesday, winning the Giant Slalom Crystal Globe. The 34-year-old skier from Val d’Aosta claimed the prestigious title after finishing second to Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami in the season’s final race at Sun Valley.
Brignone’s performance allowed her to surpass New Zealand’s Alice Robinson, who had entered the event with a 20-point lead over the Italian but skied out in the first run, ending her chances.
This marks Brignone’s second Giant Slalom title, with her first coming in 2020. It is also her second overall World Cup title, having made history in 2020 as the first Italian woman to win the overall championship.
Brignone, widely regarded as Italy’s most successful female skier, now has 37 World Cup victories. She ranks just behind the legendary Alberto Tomba, who holds 50 wins, for the most World Cup wins by an Italian skier, regardless of gender.
