Puerto Escondido is set to be named the next World Surfing Reserve, according to the Save the Waves Coalition. This recognition marks a significant step toward restoring the region’s reputation as one of the world’s top surfing destinations.
The designation will cover 10 kilometers of coastline and include eight surf breaks. The official planning process for the reserve is expected to begin in early 2026, as stated in a recent press release shared with The Inertia.
The iconic waves of Puerto Escondido, particularly those at Zicatela, have been affected by increased real estate development, drawing significant attention in recent years.
Nik Strong-Cvetich, Executive Director of Save the Waves, expressed that Puerto Escondido perfectly represents a world-class surfing ecosystem. “It boasts incredible waves, a biodiverse environment, and ecosystems that are crucial for coastal resilience, all supported by a passionate community committed to protecting their beloved coastline,” Strong-Cvetich said.
Local surfing legend Coco Nogales emphasized the importance of protecting the Zicatela wave. “Saving Zicatela would not only benefit Puerto Escondido but would also rejuvenate Playa Zicatela. It’s heartbreaking to see the wave and beach deteriorate over the past decade,” Nogales said. “Gaining the World Surfing Reserve title would be a huge step toward restoring its prestige and bringing it back among the top 10 waves in the world.”
Once designated, Puerto Escondido will become the 14th World Surfing Reserve, joining other renowned surfing locations in California, Australia, Portugal, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Brazil, and Mexico (Todos Santos).
