Portugal will host the first international surfing competition using Hawaiian canoes, set to take place at Praia do Sul, Ericeira, from March 21 to March 28. The event will feature eight teams, including two from Portugal.
The OC4 Surfing Challenge, organized by Ocean Club Ericeira, marks a milestone as the first global competition of its kind. Teams from Brazil, Spain, the United States, France, Hawaii, and Portugal will compete for the inaugural international trophy in the OC4 category, which involves surfing in four-person outrigger canoes.
“This will be a historic moment for the sport, as it is the first time OC4 teams from around the world will compete in such an event,” said Miguel Ruivo, a representative of the Portuguese team Laneez Ericeira.
The tournament lineup includes Laneez Ericeira and another Portuguese team, Kahunna Va’a from Brazil, along with CCP Extreme (Brazil), Mundaka (Spain), Malolo Canoe Surf (United States), Maimiti Va’a and Hossegor (both from France), and Go! Go! Stop! (Hawaii).
The competition will be held on the two days within the event window that provide the best surf conditions at Praia do Sul in Ericeira, Mafra.
The OC4 Surfing Challenge is organized by Ocean Club Ericeira and has been officially approved by the Portuguese Canoeing Federation.
