Four-time world para surfing champion and best-selling author Sam Bloom continues to inspire with her story of resilience. Despite her achievements, she admits she would trade them all to return to her former self.
“I would give everything back just to be me again—all the books, the movie, the world titles, everything,” she said.
Bloom’s life changed dramatically in 2013 when she fell through a rotten balcony railing while on holiday in Thailand. She plummeted six meters onto concrete, suffering severe spinal cord damage that left her paralyzed from the chest down. At the time, her three sons were just seven, nine, and ten years old.
More than a decade later, the Sydney-based athlete is using her experience to encourage other women facing adversity. “Life isn’t always perfect, and it’s OK to have a bad day,” she shared. She also emphasized the importance of asking for help during difficult times.
Bloom shared her journey of perseverance at the Newcastle Racecourse’s International Women’s Day event on Friday, March 7. Speaking to a packed marquee, she captivated the audience with her message of strength and determination.
While the betting action was subdued at the track, the social scene in the marquee was vibrant. Attendees enjoyed a three-course lunch, a five-hour beverage package, live entertainment, as well as raffles and auctions. Tickets for the event were priced at $229 per person.
Newcastle Racecourse CEO Duane Dowell highlighted the event’s charitable focus, with proceeds going to local non-profits Jenny’s Place and Grow a Star. The goal was to raise between $40,000 and $50,000, with funds to be evenly distributed between the two organizations.
Bloom’s presence at the event served as a powerful reminder of the strength found in overcoming life’s challenges. Her story continues to inspire many, reinforcing the message that resilience and support can help navigate even the toughest circumstances.
