The 2025 World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF) will feature a thrilling new event, as The Grind, a popular street-style competition, partners with the festival. The event, recently won by local Keenan Demchuk in Regina, Saskatchewan, is organized by Shred the North, a branch of Canada Snowboard.
On April 10, a wildcard qualifier will offer one additional skier and snowboarder a chance to compete in the finals two days later.
The competition will offer a total prize pool of $50,000, which will be equally divided between different genders and disciplines. The event is free to attend, with spectators able to enjoy the excitement live. For those unable to make it to Whistler, a live broadcast will capture all the action. Fans can expect impressive tricks, fierce competition, and a high-energy atmosphere as some of the world’s top riders perform at the base of Whistler Blackcomb.
Brittia Thompson, WSSF director, emphasized the festival’s commitment to pushing the limits of action sports, music, and culture. “Partnering with The Grind enhances our global presence and strengthens our dedication to showcasing the best in skiing and snowboarding,” Thompson said in a statement.
Rich Hegarty, director of The Grind, highlighted the growing popularity of street-style and park rail competitions in Canada. “Canada is a hub for talent in this thrilling urban winter discipline, and The Grind brings mind-blowing tricks that push boundaries,” he said. “We capture these incredible moments with high-quality cameras and Canada’s largest mobile TV screen, offering viewers an experience like never before.”
Hegarty also expressed his excitement for The Grind’s inclusion in the festival, noting that he has long envisioned it as the headline event for the WSSF. “I look forward to seeing this movement continue to grow,” he added.
