Top snowboarders from around the world will gather in Boston for a free snowboarding event this weekend.
The Red Bull Heavy Metal competition will take place at City Hall Plaza on Saturday, February 22, from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, offering spectators a chance to watch elite athletes compete in a one-day snowboarding contest.
The competition will feature three distinct zones, each designed to showcase different aspects of street snowboarding. These will include custom-built rails, gaps, and creative features that are sure to challenge even the most skilled riders.
X Games Gold Medalist Zeb Powell, who is leading the event, will also participate in the snowboard rail-jam competition. “Sharing the joy of snowboarding with the heart of the Northeast brings so much energy to the sport,” Powell said in a press release. “Many talented snowboarders come from around Boston, and this event will help introduce the sport to those who may not be familiar with it.”
Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, the event’s official mountain and parks partner, has contributed 300 tons of snow to ensure the competition’s conditions are as realistic as possible.
Originally launched in the early 2000s, Red Bull Heavy Metal has traveled to various cities across the country, including Duluth, Minnesota, in 2022, Detroit, Michigan, in 2023, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 2024. The Boston competition marks the second event of the year, following a stop at the Minnesota State Capitol on February 1.
