Nottingham City Council has approved minor changes to the plans for a new indoor rock climbing centre in the city, which will be operated by The Climbing Hangar, a popular UK-based bouldering gym chain.
The new facility will be located on Crocus Street, near Nottingham Station, and will take over a warehouse currently occupied by A.F.S Appliance Furniture Solutions, an electrical appliance store, according to planning documents.
The Labour-run council has granted approval for alterations to the building’s design, as well as additional car parking spaces and bike storage to accommodate visitors.
Once completed, the centre will feature a bouldering wall, a management office, a reception area, a café offering hot food and drinks, and changing room facilities. The facility will be designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating energy-efficient measures, water usage controls, and amenities that encourage walking and cycling to the site.
According to the planning documents submitted in December 2024, the climbing area will be the main attraction, offering a variety of activities for independent climbers, as well as classes for local schools, scout groups, and charities during non-peak hours.
The centre also plans to create 30 jobs—15 full-time and 15 part-time—once fully operational.
The site is located within Nottingham’s Canal Quarter Regeneration Area, an area earmarked for future development.
The Climbing Hangar, which began in a Liverpool warehouse in 2011, currently operates nine locations across the UK. In October, the company secured £20 million in investment from Verlinvest to fund its expansion.
