SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria – Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson secured the gold medal in the newly introduced team combined event at the Alpine Skiing World Championships on Tuesday.

The American duo edged out silver medalists Lara Gut-Behrami and Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by a mere 0.39 seconds. Austrian skiers Stephanie Venier and Katharina Truppe earned the bronze.

This victory marked Shiffrin’s 15th career medal at the World Championships, tying the record set by German skier Christl Cranz in the 1930s. For Johnson, it was her second gold of the week, having already triumphed in the downhill event three days earlier.

Meanwhile, American Lindsey Vonn finished the downhill in 21st place, 2.51 seconds behind the leader, and ended in 16th overall after teammate AJ Hurt raced in the slalom.

The team combined event features one skier competing in a downhill run and another in a slalom, with the combined times determining the final standings.

Next year, the team combined event will make its Olympic debut at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games.
