For the first time in history, Cambodia has sent snowboarders to compete in the Asian Winter Games. Four athletes from the tropical nation are participating in this year’s Games, which officially kicked off on Friday in Harbin City, located in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. The event runs through February 14.

This year’s 9th Asian Winter Games have attracted over 1,200 athletes from 34 countries and regions across Asia, marking the largest edition in terms of participation, according to organizers.

The Cambodian team, which made its debut at the Yabuli Ski Resort in Harbin, sees the athletes eager to gain experience and connect with their peers from around the continent.

Chantsovanratanak Doung, one of Cambodia’s competitors, expressed excitement about the opportunity despite his limited experience in snowboarding. “I’m just happy to be here and meet people from other countries.

I don’t have much experience on the snowboard, but I’m eager to try more if I get the chance to train,” Doung said. He also shared his joy about being in Harbin, though he admitted he is not yet accustomed to the city’s freezing temperatures.

Teammate Mengchoing Phin also shared his enthusiasm for the experience. “I’m so excited to be here. The winter sports are amazing. Snow, China, the people – everything is fantastic. I love the culture and the food here,” Phin said.
