The International Surfing Association (ISA) and Surf City El Salvador have sealed a groundbreaking partnership that will bring six major surfing events to the Central American country over the next three years.
This historic agreement marks the first of its kind for the ISA, highlighting the ongoing support from the Salvadoran government and ensuring continued opportunities for national federations to compete in major international surfing competitions. Surf City El Salvador, which has previously hosted nine ISA events, is now committed to organizing six more, with the possibility of additional events in the future.
The partnership will begin in 2025, with the first two events being:
- World Longboard Surfing Championship (WLSC) – April 18-24, 2025
- World Surfing Games (WSG) – September 5-14, 2025
The WLSC will be held annually for the next three years, while the WSG will alternate with the World Junior Surfing Championship in 2026. El Salvador also has the option to host the World Masters Surfing Championship during this period, following a highly successful edition of the event last year.
Under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador has become a premier surfing destination, attracting surfers, investors, and visitors from across the globe to experience its world-class waves.
In recognition of the growing surf community in El Salvador, the ISA is committed to enhancing the country’s surfing infrastructure. This includes supporting local surf schools through ISA Level I and Level II training programs for instructors. Additionally, national judges will be trained and certified through the ISA Judging Course.
As part of the partnership, the ISA will continue to assist El Salvador in promoting Surf City as a top surfing destination worldwide.
El Salvador’s Tourism Minister, Morena Valdez, commented:
“Surf City El Salvador continues to gain international recognition through long-term partnerships with world-class surfing organizations like the ISA. Our strong relationship with the ISA has helped position El Salvador’s waves on the global stage, expanding not only our surf tourism but also improving services across other national attractions.”
ISA President Fernando Aguerre expressed his pride in the partnership:
“This historic agreement is a great milestone. El Salvador’s commitment to hosting ISA World Championships for the next several years gives national federations the chance to plan ahead and develop World Champions and Olympians, with El Salvador’s exceptional surf at the heart of these plans. Surfing has transformed tourism in El Salvador, and the country’s stunning coastline continues to captivate surfers worldwide. We are excited that our close relationship with President Bukele, Minister Valdez, and the Salvadoran people will continue for many years.”
