The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning to create a new mountain biking destination in Buckeye, Arizona, as part of an expansion of the Skyline Regional Park. The proposed development would span 640 acres, adding to the existing 8,700-acre park. BLM has agreed in principle to lease or transfer the land to the city and has opened a public comment period on the proposal, which will remain open until August 23.
Located in the White Tank Mountains north of Interstate 10, the land would be used to build a network of trails connecting to the park’s current 11 mountain bike trails. The project includes the construction of trailhead parking areas, rest stops with restrooms, shade structures, seating, signage, and access roads connected to the future Verrado Road network. The new trails would be designed for multiple uses, including hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and would be single-track and non-motorized.
The BLM has also proposed future developments that could include a bike skills area. This would make use of the White Tank Mountains’ varied terrain to offer different biking challenges, such as pump tracks, BMX-style courses, flow trails, and beginner training areas.
The project is still in the planning stages and will undergo an environmental assessment after the public comment period. That assessment will also include a 30-day comment period.
