South Korea will implement a ban on surfing and other water activities under the influence of alcohol starting in June 2025. Those who violate the law could face fines of up to ₩1 million (approximately US$679).

The new regulation, announced by the South Korean Coast Guard, will prohibit the use of non-motorized watercraft—including surfboards and kayaks—by individuals with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.03% or higher. This amended law, which takes effect on June 21, builds on previous restrictions that only applied to motorized vehicles like jet skis.

The decision to expand the ban comes after an increase in alcohol-related accidents linked to water activities, the Coast Guard said. The change aims to enhance safety on the country’s waters.
