IRON RIVER, Mich. (WLUC) – Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Baumgartner spent his Sunday sharing his passion for snowboarding with kids at Ski Brule in Iron River.
Baumgartner, a four-time Olympian, has been hosting “Ride with Nick” events for nearly two decades, offering young snowboarders the chance to learn from his expertise. The event allows kids to receive guidance from Baumgartner, who started snowboarding at age 15 on the same slopes at Ski Brule.
“For me, it’s one of the best parts of being an Olympian,” Baumgartner said. “I’ve made so many amazing memories here over the years. To be a little part of that for so many other people is so cool. Getting to ride with these kids, get them excited, and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones—that’s what it’s all about.”
Throughout the years, Baumgartner has also had the opportunity to ride alongside the children of some of his former mentees, further strengthening his connection to the community.
Baumgartner emphasized the importance of sports, like snowboarding, in helping young people develop important life skills. “Sports teach kids to set goals, dream big, and face adversity. It builds character and resilience,” he explained.
In addition to his events, Baumgartner has recently released a book that he hopes will inspire others to pursue their passions. “You get one shot on this earth,” Baumgartner said. “I spend a lot of it on my snowboard because it’s fun, and I want others to find that same joy.”
Baumgartner also expressed excitement about his return to Ski Brule after a busy month of training and competition. “The best part of every trip is coming back home, here to the Upper Peninsula,” he said.
Ski Brule will host another “Ride with Nick” event on Tuesday, giving more young snowboarders a chance to learn from the Olympic champion.
