A new indoor rock climbing centre is set to open in Nottingham city centre, marking the latest expansion of The Climbing Hangar, a UK-based bouldering gym chain.

The new facility will be located on Crocus Street, taking over the space previously occupied by A.F.S Appliance Furniture Solutions, a store specializing in electrical appliances.

The centre will feature a bouldering wall as its main attraction, along with a reception area, management office, café serving hot food and drinks, and changing room facilities. The plans also include a range of activities for independent climbers, as well as special classes for local schools, scout groups, and charities during off-peak hours.

In addition to the climbing space, the development plans involve improvements to the building’s exterior, including new outdoor parking and cycle parking facilities. The renovation will incorporate sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting activated by sensors, automatic shut-off hand dryers, and measures to reduce water usage.

The centre will also downsize the mezzanine area, reducing the overall floorspace from 1,636 square meters to 1,519 square meters.

Once operational, the centre aims to employ 15 full-time and 15 part-time staff members, according to the planning documents.

This new development is part of Nottingham’s wider Canal Quarter Regeneration Area, an area earmarked for future growth. The Climbing Hangar, founded in Liverpool in 2011, now operates nine locations across the UK. Earlier this month, the company secured £20 million in funding from Verlinvest to support its expansion efforts.

The proposals are now under consideration by Nottingham City Council.
