Lolo Pass, Idaho – The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests are hosting a series of full moon skiing events this winter, giving outdoor enthusiasts a unique way to enjoy the snowy landscape under the glow of the full moon.
The events are scheduled for January 10 and February 14, with activities starting in the late afternoon. Participants will have access to free parking at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, as well as the warming hut, where they can enjoy hot chocolate and tea. Live music will be provided at each event, starting at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
The first event, which took place on Friday, featured a performance by The Queens and Mr. G, a Missoula-based cover band. According to James Sapp, Lead Snow Ranger at Lolo Pass, full moon ski events are the most popular offerings of the season, prompting the forest service to schedule one for every winter month.
“Full moon ski events are our most popular events of the year, so we have one planned for every month of winter this year,” said Sapp in a news release.
While the full moon is expected to provide ample light for skiers, forest rangers recommend that participants bring headlamps, dress warmly in layers, and exercise caution when engaging in any winter activity. Visitors should also be alert for local wildlife that inhabits the area.
During each event, a band will perform from 6 p.m. in the warming hut. Ski passes will be available for purchase, with a $5 fee for a single-day pass or a $35 fee for a season pass. On January 10, attendees can enjoy a performance by The Pack Strings, known for their mix of original and cover songs. February 14 will feature The Gravy Ladles, a Missoula band that blends bluegrass, blues, rock, reggae, and funk.
Daytime skiers are also welcome at Lolo Pass. The Visitor Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
The full moon ski events promise a one-of-a-kind winter experience, combining outdoor adventure with local music and community spirit.
