DAKAR, Senegal – Naquetta Ricks, President of the Liberia Surfing Association (LSA), led Liberia’s delegation to the closing ceremony of the Africa Surf Tour: Surf to Rise 2024, held at Surfer’s Paradise Resort in Dakar, Senegal. The event, organized by the Africa Surfing Confederation, aimed to promote African surfing and provide pathways for local surfers to qualify for international competitions like the World Surfing League and the Olympic Games.
Highlighting African Surfing
The Africa Surf Tour, which kicked off in Liberia in May 2024, marked a significant milestone for African surfing. Held in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia’s first international surfing tournament showcased the country’s beautiful beaches and strong waves, attracting surfers and spectators from across the continent.
Oumar Seye, President of the Africa Surf Tour and the Africa Surfing Confederation, emphasized that the tour was about more than just surfing. “It’s about promoting Africa as a global surfing destination and celebrating our diverse cultures and music,” he said. Seye expressed pride in hosting the closing ceremony at his resort, calling it a dream come true.
Liberia’s Active Role
Liberia’s presence at the closing ceremony included surfers Mark Tregbe and Samon Massaly, Coach Morris Sheriff, Judge Brahema Gross, and LSA President Naquetta Ricks. Their participation continued Liberia’s strong performance from May’s tournament, building momentum for future international competitions.
Ricks expressed gratitude for the support Liberia has received. “We are thankful to the Liberian government, our donors, and supporters for enabling us to compete internationally,” she said. “Liberia is proud to be part of this historic moment, and we look forward to showcasing our incredible waves and talent next year.”
A Platform for Development
The Africa Surf Tour is not just a competition, but a platform designed to nurture African surfers and promote the continent’s untapped beaches. It encourages youth participation in the sport while boosting local tourism.
“Participants and coaches are excited about returning to Liberia’s stunning waves for next year’s competition,” Ricks added.
