Central Washington University (CWU) is offering lead climbing clinics designed to teach students essential safety skills for climbing. These clinics are crucial because climbers are responsible for their own safety, whether in a rock gym or on outdoor routes. Without proper training, climbers risk serious accidents.
The lead climbing clinic focuses on the skills needed for outdoor climbing, particularly in the local area where lead sport climbing is common. According to instructor Scully, “Our gym is primarily set up for rope climbing, and secondarily it’s a bouldering gym. We teach the skills needed to go out climbing.” The closest climbing areas, such as the Columbia River Basin Vantage, feature large cliff bands and bolts in the rock, making lead climbing techniques essential.
Scully emphasizes the importance of learning how to climb safely.
“Lead climbing is a more dynamic process than top rope climbing,” he explains. This makes it vital for climbers to acquire the necessary skills to ensure their safety while climbing.
In addition to lead climbing clinics, CWU offers various other climbing programs to educate students. “We have bouldering technique clinics and top rope clinics, which involve belaying with the rope already above you,” Scully noted. There are also traditional (Trad) placement clinics that teach students how to use traditional climbing gear when no bolts are available. This variety allows students to choose the type of climbing that suits them best.
Looking ahead, CWU will host its annual NC3 bouldering competition on January 27, 2025. This event is organized by the University Recreation & Adventures Program and welcomes participants of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced climbers. Last year’s competition was a success, drawing significant interest from the community. Registration for the event costs $35, and more details can be found on the CWU Climbing Wall page.
Scully encourages those who may be unsure about trying climbing to visit the climbing wall. “It’s a great informal space just to sit on the pads and talk to other students,” he said. The environment is relaxed and welcoming, making it an ideal place for students who may not be interested in traditional exercise but want to connect with others.
The CWU rock gym is open to everyone, regardless of skill level. It encourages all interested individuals to participate in clinics and learn techniques that promote safety while enjoying the thrill of climbing.
