The Hong Kong government has reaffirmed its ban on surfing at public beaches, effectively eliminating any hopes of the city competing in surfing events at the Olympics. Lawmaker Adrian Pedro Ho King-hong, a member of the New People’s Party, sought to engage with officials in hopes of reversing this decision. However, he was informed by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) that there would be no changes to the current policy.
This crackdown on surfing began earlier this year at Big Wave Bay, where authorities have enforced strict regulations against the sport. Ho expressed disappointment at the government’s refusal to reconsider its stance despite ongoing discussions about promoting water sports in Hong Kong.
The government’s firm position on this issue raises questions about the future of surfing as a competitive sport in the region and reflects broader challenges faced by local sports enthusiasts seeking recognition and support from authorities.
