In a landmark legal victory, transgender activist Roxy Tickle has secured $10,000 in damages from the Giggle for Girls app, marking a significant moment for transgender rights in Australia. The decision represents a crucial step towards greater inclusivity and equality for transgender individuals across the country.

Roxy Tickle, a 54-year-old transgender woman who embraced her identity in 2017, has been a prominent advocate for transgender rights. Her recent court victory addresses her exclusion from Giggle for Girls, an online platform designed as a safe space for women. The app removed Tickle from its network, citing her appearance as not meeting their criteria for female identification. Justice Robert Bromwich, who ruled in Tickle’s favor, deemed this exclusion as discriminatory.

Tickle originally sought damages amounting to $200,000 but was awarded $10,000. Despite the reduced amount, Tickle views the ruling as a significant achievement for the transgender and gender-diverse communities. She expressed hope that this case would serve as a beacon for others facing similar challenges.

In her statement following the ruling, Tickle reflected on the personal toll the case had taken: “This case and the unlawful and discriminatory exclusion from the Giggle app have stolen the last three years of my life. I have been subjected to hateful online comments and derogatory merchandise designed to mock me. This victory is not just for me but for all transgender people who face discrimination.”

Tickle’s campaign for transgender rights also gained prominence in February when she publicly criticized Rip Curl. The surfwear brand had initially celebrated transgender surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson in a social media post but quickly retracted it following backlash from transphobic groups. Tickle condemned Rip Curl’s response as “cowardly” and used her platform to challenge such discriminatory behavior.

In a related social media post, Tickle used an image of German singer Kim Petras to illustrate the fluidity of gender, humorously remarking, “Apparently, some people are referring to Kim Petras as a man. Shoulda gone to Specsavers.”

Tickle’s recent court victory not only represents a personal triumph but also signals a broader commitment to advancing transgender rights and combating discrimination in various spheres of society.
