In what was meant to be a dream surfing expedition, 19-year-old Perth native Jensen Kirby faced a harrowing ordeal that nearly cost him his life. Kirby had set out for a two-month surfing adventure in the Telo Islands off northern Sumatra, Indonesia, when a catastrophic accident left him with severe burns covering 13 percent of his body.
The journey to the Telo Islands involves a flight to Padang in western Sumatra, followed by a speedboat transfer to the remote resorts that cater to surfers. It was during one such speedboat trip that Kirby’s adventure took a dramatic turn for the worse.
Describing the incident in an interview with Jo Trilling on ABC Radio Perth, Kirby recounted, “The mechanic was attaching the battery when he mistakenly reversed the connections—negative to positive and positive to negative. The moment it connected, there was a spark that ignited the petrol fumes on the boat. All I saw was the spark, and then the flames erupted around me. I was engulfed in fire.”
In a desperate bid to escape the inferno, Kirby leaped into the water. “I was terrified. I just jumped straight into the water and swam as far away as I could, fearing another explosion,” he said.
Once he reached the shore, Kirby realized the extent of his injuries, describing the sensation on his skin as “sunburn times a hundred.” The severity of his burns was so intense that he compared the feeling to having “the skin on my leg peel off like someone tearing paper.”
Faced with the urgent need for medical care, Kirby contacted his mother and sought assistance from the boat crew. They managed to secure a seat on a small aircraft from a nearby resort, which flew him to Padang. “I wrapped myself in all the bandages available and boarded a boat to the airport on a different island,” he recounted.
From Padang, Kirby took another flight to Kuala Lumpur, where his mother met him and arranged for hospital treatment. “Without my mum, I wouldn’t have been able to get the necessary treatment. They required a $10,000 deposit, which I didn’t have,” he explained.
Following initial treatment in Malaysia, Kirby and his mother returned to Perth for further medical care. While he is on the road to recovery, he faces a long journey ahead. “Doctors have warned that it will take years for my skin to fully recover. I’ll need to be extremely cautious about sun exposure and wear protective clothing, like large bucket hats and long sleeves, whenever I’m outside,” Kirby said.
Despite the traumatic experience, Kirby remains hopeful. “I’m eager to get back in the water someday, but this ordeal was truly terrifying. I didn’t know if I’d survive or if my limbs would be lost to infection.”
Kirby’s story serves as a stark reminder of the perils associated with remote adventures and the critical importance of adequate safety measures and medical preparedness.
