Three South Korean nationals were tragically killed in a head-on collision on New Zealand’s South Island on Wednesday, as confirmed by local authorities and diplomatic sources.
The accident, which involved two vehicles, occurred in the Aoraki region. The collision resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with one other person suffering severe injuries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, among the deceased is a South Korean skiing coach, along with two alpine skiers. A fourth member of their group remains in critical condition.
The Korean Foreign Ministry has opted not to disclose the victims’ personal details to respect their privacy.
The New Zealand Herald reported that the crash took place around 3:15 p.m. on State Highway 79. The victims were in New Zealand for training and sports events.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that the victims were members of the South Korean national ski team, the Korea Ski and Snowboard Association clarified that they were not affiliated with the national team.
The Korean mission in New Zealand has announced that it is offering consular support to the families of the deceased.
