Santa Cruz, CA — Brock Johnson, a 19-year-old stunt cyclist from Santa Cruz, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new world record for bike surfing. On Friday, Johnson surpassed the previous record of 80 meters, successfully traveling 200 meters while balancing on his bike.

Bike surfing, a high-flying BMX maneuver, involves a cyclist positioning one foot on the handlebars and the other on the seat. Johnson, a seasoned member of the Santa Cruz Maniacs bike crew, executed this challenging stunt with precision, extending the record distance significantly.

Described as a professional stunt rider, Johnson’s remarkable achievement was met with enthusiasm from his peers. Phoenix Campbell, a fellow cyclist, recounted Johnson’s impressive performance, including a daring ride down “Miramar Death Hill,” the most challenging hill in Santa Cruz for stunt riding. “I’ve seen him surf on his bike for 20 minutes straight, just pumping around,” Campbell remarked. “We’ve seen guys who claim to be the best bike surfers out there, and really, none of them compare to the stuff Brock can do.”

Kief Laughron, another friend, praised Johnson as a “natural” on the bike. Johnson himself reminisced about his early biking days. “I remember grabbing my bike when I was 3 years old and going and pedaling around the block,” Johnson said. “People would call my mom, and she’d say, ‘Oh, he’s alright. He knows how to ride that bike.'”

The record-breaking attempt took place at Santa Cruz High School, where Johnson, surrounded by his bike crew, high school students, and onlookers, began his sprint around the track. As he hopped onto his handlebars and seat, Johnson exceeded his 100-meter goal effortlessly, continuing past the 200-meter mark with ease. His triumphant moment was captured by spectators, who cheered and filmed the record-setting run.

Following his successful attempt, Johnson celebrated by dismounting and tossing his helmet in excitement. Despite the achievement, Johnson’s record will be officially recognized only after the submission of his log book to Guinness World Records. The review process includes adhering to strict guidelines, such as conducting the attempt at a sports facility, having two athletic officials time the event, submitting a cover letter, and providing eyewitness statements. Wearing a helmet during the attempt is also mandatory.

In the meantime, Johnson and his crew are enjoying their newfound fame, continuing to perform stunts around Santa Cruz as they await the official confirmation from Guinness.
