A recent study reveals that rock climbers visiting the Obed Wild & Scenic River contribute approximately $768,000 each year to the local economy. This report, conducted by the Access Fund, Southeastern Climbers Coalition, and East Tennessee Climbers Coalition, highlights the significant economic impact of climbing tourism in the region.
The Obed Wild & Scenic River, situated between Knoxville and Crossville in the Upper Cumberland Plateau, attracts an estimated 12,000 climbing visits annually. Notably, 62% of these climbers stay overnight in the area, further boosting local spending.
The economic breakdown of climbers’ expenditures includes short-term housing rentals at 43%, gasoline at 21%, dine-in restaurants at 19%, fast food, groceries, and snacks at 10%, camping at 4%, and hotels at 3%.
The study also provided demographic insights, revealing that two-thirds of the respondents were male, 85% were white, 88% held at least a four-year college degree, and 66% had an average annual income exceeding $50,000.
The Obed Wild and Scenic River features 45 miles of river and rugged gorges, renowned for their exceptional rock formations ideal for climbing. The area boasts over 400 climbing routes and is a popular destination for bouldering on prominent, exposed boulders.
