In this week’s bike report, Sabrina Ullman teamed up with Krista Holden, an employee at Ski Hut, to put a pair of e-mountain bikes to the test. The duo explored Lester Park on two Trek Rail e-mountain bikes, part of the Ski Hut Adventure Center’s rental fleet, which offers a range of electric bike options from cruiser e-bikes to full-power e-mountain bikes.

The Trek Rail, a full-suspension e-mountain bike, is equipped with four distinct battery assistance settings. These range from the energy-efficient “Eco” mode to the powerful “Turbo” mode, with “Tour” and “E-Mountain Bike” settings in between. According to Holden, the choice of mode can significantly impact the ride experience, depending on whether you’re looking for a longer journey or a more intense workout.

“You can cover a lot of ground on any of these bikes, regardless of the mode,” said Holden. “But if you’re planning a long ride or want to challenge yourself on the hills, using the Eco mode or one of the lower settings is ideal.”

As they ventured onto the green trail of Lester River, Ullman and Holden were treated to picturesque river views throughout their ride. The e-mountain bikes made climbing hills a breeze, allowing the riders to enjoy the scenery without getting winded. However, the downhill stretches, especially over bridges, provided just enough of a challenge to keep things interesting—so much so that Sabrina found herself taking a tumble by the end of the ride.
