West Virginia State Parks Break New Ground with Ambitious Trail Development
In a significant development for outdoor enthusiasts, West Virginia State Parks has officially launched construction on its most extensive mountain bike trail project to date. The $3.5 million initiative, set to unfold at Cacapon Resort State Park, marks a bold step in enhancing the state’s recreational infrastructure.
The extensive project aims to introduce 35 miles of professionally crafted mountain bike trails, significantly augmenting the park’s current offerings. Designed to cater to a range of skill levels, from novices to seasoned riders, the new trails will elevate Cacapon Resort’s status as a premier destination for outdoor activities in the region.
Brett McMillion, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s commencement. “This is an incredible day for Cacapon Resort and West Virginia as we continue to invest in our world-class parks system,” McMillion stated. “We are thrilled to embark on this ambitious project, which promises to enhance visitor experiences at Cacapon Resort and draw new guests to explore our stunning state.”
The initiative seeks to diversify the park’s existing trail network by integrating mountain biking trails that capitalize on the park’s rugged terrain. Alongside the trail expansion, the project will feature bike amenities for visitors, youth-oriented facilities, and a signature trail designed to attract riders from across the state and beyond.
Construction will proceed in two phases, with the first phase already underway, managed by Greenstone Trailcraft. The second phase is scheduled to commence in spring 2025, with the entire project anticipated to reach completion by 2026.
This trail expansion is a cornerstone of West Virginia’s broader strategy to enhance its state parks system. Over the past seven years, the state has invested more than $250 million in various park improvement projects, underscoring its commitment to outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.
