A Suffolk centenarian known for her adventurous spirit is gearing up for a daring new feat that will etch her name in the record books. Manette Baillie, a 102-year-old from Suffolk, is set to make history by becoming the oldest person to undertake a tandem skydive. The exhilarating jump will take place at Beccles Airfield on August 25, coinciding with her milestone birthday.

Baillie’s penchant for thrills is well-documented. In July 2022, she celebrated her 100th birthday by racing around the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in a Ferrari, reaching speeds of up to 130mph. Now, she is taking her audacity to new heights with this skydiving challenge.

Reflecting on her decision to take the plunge, Baillie explained, “You must always look for something new.” Her adventurous spirit is no surprise given her background—she was once married to a paratrooper and served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRENS).

This skydiving endeavor is not just a personal achievement; Baillie is also using it as a platform to raise funds for several causes. Proceeds from her jump will go towards the renovation of Benhall Village Hall, a structure originally built for World War I service personnel. Additionally, she is supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Baillie attributes her longevity to a life filled with community, kindness, and active engagement. She shared her philosophy: “Community, friends, and being among people is my secret to life. Keep busy, be interested in everything, be kind to those around you, and let them be kind to you. Oh, and don’t forget to party.”

Born in London and educated at Streatham Hill High School (now Streatham and Clapham High School), Baillie joined the Land Army during World War II before serving in the WRENS. Her personal life includes two marriages—first to Derek Bowden and later to Adam Reid Baillie, with whom she had a son, Anthony. Together, they managed a variety of businesses, from selling hay and animal feed to running a mail-order compost seeds business.

Following Adam’s death at age 85, Baillie moved to Benhall, where she resided at Lime Tree House. She attributes her long life to the unwavering support of her family, stating, “All my family have always been supportive my whole life. Basically, you have just got to get on and do things. Keep moving and keep busy, and you have got to love other people. I just naturally love other people and I love talking to other people.”
