Jack Robinson, a proud product of Margaret River’s renowned surfing community, clinched the silver medal in Olympic surfing on Tuesday morning. Despite narrowly missing out on the gold, Robinson’s performance captivated his hometown and inspired a wave of local pride.
Robinson, who grew up riding the waves in Western Australia’s surfing capital, fell just short of the top spot, losing to Tahitian competitor Kauli Vaast in the final. His achievement, however, has been a source of immense pride for the residents of Margaret River.
Early Tuesday, students from Margaret River High School’s surfing academy rallied together to support Robinson, cheering him on during their classes and in the early hours of the day.
Ruby Berry, a dedicated surf student, shared her excitement and admiration for Robinson. “We’re absolutely thrilled for him—our whole house was cheering. I remember seeing him when I was younger, and now witnessing his success at this level is incredibly inspiring,” she said.
Olive Hardy, another local surf enthusiast, praised Robinson for his generosity and support within the community. “He’s always so encouraging to younger surfers. Whether you’re at the local breaks or elsewhere, if he spots you, he’ll offer a compliment like ‘that was a sick turn,’ which is really motivating,” Hardy remarked.
