Olympic Village in Tahiti

As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach, the surfing competition is set to make history with a groundbreaking venue—the world’s first floating Olympic village. This innovation marks a significant leap for the Games, establishing new records and enhancing the Olympic experience in unprecedented ways.

For the first time, an Olympic event will be hosted at an extraordinary distance from the main city. Tahiti, located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, will be the venue for surfing events, an impressive 15,705 kilometers from Paris. This surpasses the previous record of 15,589 kilometers, set during the Melbourne 1956 Olympics when equestrian events were held in Stockholm due to Australia’s stringent quarantine regulations.

To accommodate athletes in this remote locale, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has chartered the Aranui 5, a luxurious mixed cargo and passenger cruise ship, as the floating Olympic village. This pioneering approach addresses the logistical challenge of housing competitors far from the host city.

The Aranui 5 is equipped with an array of amenities designed to offer athletes comfort and leisure. The vessel features a 24-hour dining hall, an activity center with foosball and ping pong tables, and an Olympic gift shop. For recreation, the ship boasts a water slide, a lounge, two conference rooms, three bars—including one on the top deck—a swimming pool, spa, and gym. Notably, the Aranui 5 also includes an on-board tattoo parlor, a unique first for the Olympics, where athletes can commemorate their participation with Olympic-themed tattoos.

Tokyo silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi recently provided a glimpse into the ship’s facilities through a video tour, showcasing the spacious cabins with stunning ocean views and comfortable queen beds, a stark contrast to the more modest accommodations in the main Olympic village in Paris.

Athletes will be transported to the competition site at the renowned Teahupo’o break via a quick five-minute ferry ride. Upon arrival, they will be welcomed with a traditional Te T’amu ceremony by the local community, adding a touch of cultural warmth to the historic event.

With these innovative arrangements, the Paris 2024 surfing competition is poised to be a memorable chapter in Olympic history, blending luxury and athleticism in the breathtaking setting of Tahiti.
