The Santa Cruz Surf Shop Owner Dominates in SURFER Big Wave Challenge Entry
Peter Mel’s reputation as a master of big-wave surfing is unparalleled, and his recent performance at Mavericks reaffirms his legacy. With over 30 years at the top tier of the sport, Mel’s consistency and longevity continue to set him apart.
On December 28, 2023, during a day of massive swells at Mavericks, Mel submitted his entry into the 2024 SURFER Big Wave Challenge. The waves that day were formidable, pouring more energy and power into Mavericks than any other swell that season. For Peter Mel, now 54, this was just another day at the office.
Choosing his moments carefully, Mel executed a flawless ride on a slick 6’0″ x 16 ½” x 2 ⅛” Channel Islands quad. With his extensive experience, he expertly navigated the massive wave, positioning himself deep in the pocket and allowing the bowl to form ahead. Adding a touch of showmanship, he even threw his hands up mid-ride.
“Swell today had some grunt,” he reflected on Instagram. “Black diamond conditions.”
This wave was not his only triumph that day. He tackled the whitewash with the same precision and skill, showcasing his enduring prowess.
Adding to his impressive career is the bond he shares with his son, John Mel, also an accomplished surfer. Both father and son recently signed deals with Darc Sport, a bodybuilding brand expanding into MMA and surfing. The brand also sponsors notable figures like Bruce Irons, Koa Rothman, and UFC star Max Holloway. With continued success and support, Peter and John Mel are set to dominate the surfing world together for years to come.
