SANTA MONICA, CA — Lifeguards issued urgent warnings to beach visitors at Santa Monica, cautioning about hazardous conditions and heightened drowning risks expected this week.
Starting Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service reported that dangerous rip currents and waves reaching up to 6 feet will impact the Los Angeles County coast. Forecasters emphasized the rapid onset of these waves and advised swimmers to avoid the water altogether.
“Due to hazardous swimming conditions, it’s crucial to stay clear of the water or remain near lifeguard stations,” warned the weather service. They also highlighted the peril of rock jetties under such conditions, urging people to steer clear of these areas.
Surf heights are projected to escalate from 3 to 6 feet on Tuesday to 4 to 6 feet by Wednesday.
Both Tuesday and Wednesday carry a high risk of rip currents, amplifying the danger. Officials underscored the increased risk of drowning due to powerful rip currents capable of pulling swimmers and surfers offshore. The NWS further cautioned that the waves could potentially sweep individuals from beaches and rocks and overturn small boats near the shore.
The hazard advisory remains in effect until Thursday evening, according to forecasters.
