The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Advisory for the south facing shores across all Hawaiian Islands.
Large breaking waves measuring 8 to 12 feet are expected along the shores of Kona, Kaʻū, and Puna until 6 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, the current long period south swell (180-190 degrees) will reach its peak overnight and early Monday. Advisory conditions may persist through Monday night, gradually subsiding from Tuesday into Friday.
“A High Surf Advisory indicates surf conditions will be above normal. Shore breaks and hazardous currents could pose risks of injury or fatality,” cautioned the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense. “All beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers are advised to closely follow guidance from ocean safety officials and exercise extreme caution when entering the water.”
