Maddie Anzivino’s journey from Bakersfield to the North Shore has been nothing short of remarkable. A graduate of the University of Hawaii with a competitive sailing background, she now stands as the North Shore’s sole full-time female lifeguard. Beyond her duties saving lives, Anzivino has made waves in the surfing world, regularly competing in the Red Bull Magnitude Big Wave events.
The ocean has been more than just a workplace for Anzivino; it’s been a lifeline. Following the sudden loss of her mother, she battled through depression, finding solace and renewal in the power of the sea. Reflecting on her struggles, she shared with the WSL how the challenge of big waves helped shift her perspective during dark times.
“Getting that rush out in huge surf, catching that massive wave—it’s such an accomplishment,” Anzivino expressed. “It’s a fiery feeling that turned my mindset around and brought me joy.”
Raised in Torrance, California, the 31-year-old has become a fixture at Waimea Bay, earning recognition through her participation in the Red Bull Magnitude series. However, it was her fearless approach at Jaws, where she earned a spot in the 2024 SURFER Big Wave Challenge on only her second visit, that truly solidified her reputation.
