The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) has recently secured 118.6 acres along Wheeler Mountain Road in Sutton, marking a significant expansion of Willoughby State Forest. This acquisition, made possible through collaboration with private landowner John Krieble and various conservation programs, encompasses Wheeler Mountain’s iconic ridgeline, cliffs, and summit.

John Krieble, the former owner, expressed enthusiasm about the sale, highlighting the preservation of the mountain’s trails and climbing spots for future generations. “I’m thrilled to know that the Wheeler Mountain trails and cliffs will now be protected for generations of hikers and rock climbers to come,” said Krieble.

Funding for the acquisition came from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s Habitat Stamp program. This initiative aims to safeguard the granitic ridgeline of Wheeler Mountain, renowned for its panoramic views and critical habitat for Peregrine falcons. The area also forms part of a vital wildlife corridor spanning from the Worcester Range to the Northeast Kingdom.

Luke O’Brien, Forest Recreation Specialist at FPR, underscored the significance of the acquisition, noting, “Wheeler Mountain is such an incredible feature in the broader Willoughby landscape, and a wonderful ecological and recreational resource.” Public access to hiking trails and rock climbing areas, historically permitted under temporary agreements, is now permanently ensured under FPR’s management.

Visitors can access the newly acquired area from the Wheeler Mountain parking area and hiking trail off Wheeler Mountain Road in Sutton. The addition enhances Willoughby State Forest’s appeal as a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, promising enhanced opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife observation in Vermont’s scenic Northeast Kingdom.
