A 65-year-old woman from Putte, Antwerp Province, tragically lost her life in a tandem skydive accident in Diest, Flemish Brabant. The incident, confirmed by the Leuven public prosecutor’s office, occurred when the woman was participating in a joint parachute jump with her instructor.
The 30-year-old instructor sustained severe injuries and is currently fighting for his life in the hospital. The mishap took place in Schaffen, Diest, on Sunday afternoon when the parachute suddenly collapsed approximately 10 meters above the ground, reportedly due to a violent gust of wind.
Diest Mayor Christophe De Graef described the instructor as “a very experienced young man” and noted that the skydive was a long-held dream for the woman. “It was on her bucket list, and her family was with her in the air. This is a very unfortunate accident,” De Graef remarked.
The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident. Lab technicians, a police doctor, and a parachute expert were dispatched to the scene. Preliminary findings from the prosecutor’s office indicate that the accident was a tragic mishap.
