Piermario Calcamuggi, celebrated as one of the most successful coaches in international skiing, passed away suddenly yesterday afternoon at the age of 74. His death followed a rapid decline in health subsequent to a routine heart procedure that initially appeared successful. Following the procedure, Calcamuggi spoke with his wife Ita and children Matteo and Elisa, expressing plans for a future gathering at their home in Champoluc. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated swiftly, leading to his untimely passing.

Calcamuggi served as the technical director during the early ’90s, a pivotal period for Italian skiing. He guided athletes such as Deborah Compagnoni, Lara Magoni, Isolde Kostner, and Sabina Panzanini, who collectively secured Italy’s victories at the Albertville ’92 and Lillehammer ’94 Olympics, along with the remarkable triple triumph at the Narvik giant slalom in ’96.

The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) expressed profound sorrow upon learning of Calcamuggi’s death and extended heartfelt condolences to his family. “The most heartfelt condolences from President Roda, the Federal Council, the technicians, the athletes, and the entire staff go to the Calcamuggi family,” stated a note from FISI.
