The recent Thai National Championships at the Kaeng Krachan Circuit, renowned for motorcycle racing, highlighted the remarkable rise of roller skiing in Southeast Asia. Organized by the Ski and Snowboard Association of Thailand (SSAT), the event drew praise for its flawless execution and organization.
Both participants and spectators marveled at the event’s scale and smooth management. “The event was amazing and very well organized,” stated Karl Kristensen, a trailblazer for roller skiing in Thailand. Reflecting on the event’s progress, he noted, “Each edition of the event improves significantly.”
The selection of the Kaeng Krachan Circuit, with its smooth surface, proved ideal for roller skiing. Kristensen commented, “Everything was flawlessly organized without any issues at all, and with live coverage of the races on YouTube to follow the athletes throughout the course.”
The competition saw over 250 athletes from nine countries, including newcomers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and the Philippines, contributing to the event’s diversity. Although traditional cross-country skiing nations were absent, organizers remain hopeful for future international participation. “Thailand has become the leading ski-country in Southeast Asia,” Kristensen proudly remarked. “Other nations like the Philippines are catching up, and we hope to see Vietnam, Singapore, and others join us soon.”
Looking ahead, the inclusion of roller skiing in the Southeast Asia Games in December 2025 marks a significant milestone for the sport’s regional development. SSAT’s commitment to growth and organizational excellence promises a bright future for roller skiing in Southeast Asia.
“I want to commend SSAT for their development as an organization,” added founding member Kristensen. “I’m proud to be part of this roller ski adventure in Southeast Asia.”
As roller skiing gains momentum in the region, SSAT and its supporters anticipate further expanding the sport’s reach and enhancing its competitive landscape. With each successful event, the future of roller skiing in Southeast Asia appears promising, paving the way for more thrilling competitions and broader international participation.
“I expect the events to just get bigger and better for many years to come,” Kristensen concluded.
