On this day, ski areas throughout Canada will invite residents to partake in festivities that showcase the joy and health benefits of skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing. Paul Pinchbeck, President and CEO of the Canadian Ski Council, emphasized that this event is a celebration of shared passions among Canadians who enjoy these winter activities. He also noted that it welcomes newcomers to join in the fun.
Dr. Christine Courbasson, a clinical psychologist, pointed out the mental and physical health advantages of outdoor recreation. She stated that engaging in activities like skiing and snowboarding can significantly reduce stress and improve mood. Time spent outdoors has been shown to alleviate mental distress, contributing positively to overall psychological well-being.
In anticipation of National Ski and Snowboard Day, the Canadian Ski Council encourages the public to share their memorable experiences related to snow sports. Participants will have a chance to win prizes through a random draw, and selected submissions will be featured in a video compilation shared on social media on February 21.
According to the Canadian Ski Council, approximately 21% of Canadians identify as alpine skiers, snowboarders, or cross-country skiers. Participation in these sports surged by 25% following the COVID-19 pandemic. The snow sports industry generates an estimated $4.4 billion annually and employs over 100,000 people across Canada.
National Ski and Snowboard Day serves not only as a celebration but also as an invitation for all Canadians to embrace winter sports and enjoy the beauty of Canada’s landscapes.
