Mountain Bike Rotorua is once again brightening the holidays for local families with its annual Share the Ride for Xmas programme, gifting brand-new Giant mountain bikes to ten Rotorua whānau.
The initiative invites community members to nominate individuals or families who could greatly benefit from receiving a new bike. Over the past few weeks, numerous heartfelt nominations have poured in, with many highlighting individuals facing mobility challenges, chronic pain, or those who selflessly volunteer in their communities.
Despite their contributions, many nominees struggle to afford a bike of their own. In response, Mountain Bike Rotorua’s owners—Takurua Mutu, Tuhua Mutu, Jayne Hendrikse, and Janine Kavanagh—have selected ten deserving recipients, each receiving a new Giant bike valued at over $1,000.
Since its launch, Share the Ride has provided more than 300 bikes to local residents. The programme has become a key initiative in promoting community connection, mobility, and the joy of cycling in Rotorua.
“We are always humbled by the stories we hear and excited to support those most in need in our community through Share the Ride,” said Takurua Mutu, company director. “We recognize that very few organizations support grassroots mountain biking in Rotorua, and we aim to break down barriers so that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can become part of Rotorua’s vibrant biking community.”
Mountain Bike Rotorua continues to lead the way in local cycling initiatives, with strong backing from their longtime partner, Giant Bicycles New Zealand. Since 2015, Giant has been a key supporter of the Share the Ride programme, becoming an official partner in 2021 after local club co-funding was cut.
“Without our amazing partners like Giant Bicycles New Zealand, we couldn’t make this happen,” Mutu added. “Their ongoing support is crucial to the success of this programme, allowing us to bring the freedom and joy of cycling to more Rotorua locals.”
This year, the lucky recipients will receive their bikes just in time for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Takurua Mutu, Jayne Hendrikse, and their daughter Maia Mutu will personally deliver the bikes to the selected families, ensuring that the gifts bring holiday cheer and a sense of joy that will carry through to Christmas morning.
“We’re proud to continue making a difference through initiatives like Share the Ride for Xmas,” said Mutu. “As 2024 comes to a close, our team at Mountain Bike Rotorua, along with our partners at Tohu Experiences and Crankworx, reflect on the power of community and the importance of providing everyone the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.”
Through these efforts, Mountain Bike Rotorua continues to make cycling more accessible and foster a sense of belonging for everyone in the community.
