LARAMIE, Wyo. — Sammy Veauthier, a zoology major from Casper, will represent the University of Wyoming at the 2025 World University Games in Pragelato, Italy. Veauthier, a standout member of the UW Nordic ski team, will join fellow athlete Kaj Taylor and coaches Christi Boggs and Rachel Watson for the prestigious competition.

The Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Games, which will take place from January 12 to 22, are considered one of the largest global winter sports events outside of the Winter Olympics. Veauthier’s participation marks the sixth time a University of Wyoming athlete has competed in this international event.

A graduate of Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Veauthier has a strong background in athletics and currently serves as president of the UW Nordic Ski Team. At the World University Games, she will race alongside more than 2,500 athletes from over 50 countries, showcasing a variety of classic winter sports.

The event will feature some of the top student-athletes worldwide, with selections based on both athletic performance and academic excellence. According to coaches Boggs and Watson, Veauthier’s inclusion is a significant accomplishment for the University of Wyoming, particularly given the small size of the state’s student-athlete pool.

“Their selection was based on both athletic performance and academic merit, highlighting the caliber of student-athletes at the University of Wyoming,” the coaches said in a statement.

The cost of attending the World University Games is largely the responsibility of the athletes themselves. UW reports that the estimated expense for competing is around $3,700 per person. In addition to training expenses, the athletes must cover travel and accommodation costs. To support Veauthier and Taylor, the University of Wyoming has set up a donation page for those wishing to contribute to the athletes’ funding needs.
