ShredShox has introduced the world’s first full-suspension platform for ski bindings, aiming to enhance stability and comfort on the slopes. The question remains: is this a genuine innovation or merely a novelty?
Suspension systems are common in various vehicles and equipment, including motorcycles, bicycles, and cars. This prompted Nick Foster and Ken Nichols to develop ShredShox, which utilizes air shocks to suspend ski bindings above the skis. According to the brand, this technology improves control, enhances jumping capabilities, and reduces skier fatigue.
Describing the concept as “unconventional,” ShredShox represents a significant shift in ski technology. Jarrod Kirsiloff, head of brand at ShredShox, stated that mountain testing has shown improved stability at high speeds and better carving in all conditions. He emphasized that performance and tunability are core aspects of the product.
If ShredShox can indeed elevate skiing performance while increasing comfort, it could transform the sport similarly to how full-suspension systems revolutionized mountain biking in the early 1990s. However, this potential remains contingent on further validation.
The ShredShox platform features a suspended carbon structure that provides a flexible yet durable base for skis. This design allows for better energy management during turns and impacts by distributing forces across the ski’s surface. The use of carbon fiber enhances strength while minimizing weight, contributing to improved maneuverability.
The air suspension system absorbs shocks from uneven terrain, maintaining consistent contact with the snow and reducing vibrations—commonly referred to as “chatter.” Skiers can also customize air pressure settings to match their preferences and conditions, similar to adjustments made in motorsports.
Currently, ShredShox is undergoing extensive testing with positive feedback from professional skiers. The company plans to refine its product further and establish retail partnerships before launching it for sale next season. As they continue their development journey, ShredShox may soon become a familiar name among skiing enthusiasts.
