France has successfully defended its title at the 2024 ISA Para Surfing World Championship, held in Huntington Beach, California. The event showcased the best para surfers from around the globe and concluded with a thrilling competition that drew enthusiastic crowds.
The ninth edition of the championship wrapped up with fourteen world champions crowned. France emerged as the top team, earning a total of ten medals: two gold, two silver, two bronze, and four copper. The United States finished in second place, followed by Australia in third and Spain in fourth.
Colombia’s Freddy Marimón achieved his second world title after a close contest with Brazil’s Davi Teixeira. Marimón scored 16.93 points to Teixeira’s 16.63. After his victory, Marimón reflected on the years of dedication that led to this moment, highlighting his long-standing rivalry with Teixeira.
In women’s categories, Portugal’s Marta Paço and the USA’s Sarah Bettencourt each secured their fourth world titles, joining Canada’s Victoria Feige among the elite female para surfers. Paço emphasized her desire to inspire others through her achievements and noted the growth of women’s participation in para surfing.
The championship also saw six new champions crowned across various categories, including Spain’s Audrey Pascual and Brazil’s Luciano Silveira, who impressed with their high scores. Pascual celebrated her long-awaited victory in her fifth final, showcasing the competitive spirit among participants.
Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA, praised the event for its role in promoting para surfing and building a better world through the sport. He expressed a commitment to continue supporting the para surfing community.
The 2024 ISA World Para Surfing Championship not only reaffirmed France’s dominance but also highlighted the talent and dedication of athletes committed to advancing para surfing globally.
