Charles Costa, the UK musician formerly known as King Charles, has successfully completed his remarkable challenge of running 90 marathons in 90 days along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Coinciding with this achievement, he has released his first single, “Nothing at the Most,” from his upcoming self-titled album. This marks a significant turning point in Costa’s career, which had been interrupted for a decade due to a skiing accident that resulted in brain trauma and ongoing mental health struggles.
Rebranding himself under his birth name, Costa aims to explore deeper personal themes in his music. He is set to unveil more singles in the lead-up to the album’s release on January 24, 2025. The change comes after years of sharing a stage name with the British monarch and a desire to authentically present himself as an artist.
The 90 Marathons in 90 Days challenge not only serves as a personal milestone but also as a platform to raise awareness for mental health. Throughout this grueling 2,650-mile journey, Costa has supported two charities: The Jed Foundation, which focuses on emotional health and suicide prevention for young people in the U.S., and James’ Place, a UK-based organization dedicated to suicide prevention for men.
“Mental health is an ongoing battle,” Costa remarked. “With this run, I want to emphasize that running can be a powerful, healing activity. It helps to clear your mind, get your heart pumping, and connect you back to your humanity. It’s about linking your spirit to the world, to music, and to melody. I believe that both running and singing can provide immediate relief from mental struggles.”
The single “Nothing at the Most” reflects Costa’s new musical direction, showcasing a blend of longing and lament. Produced in collaboration with Jesse Quin at Old Jet Studios, the song embodies a unique sound that marks a departure from his previous work as King Charles. The track features an emotive chamber-pop arrangement enriched with strings, presenting a more intimate and authentic side of Costa’s artistry.
“Nothing at the Most” captures the essence of a man who has spent much of his life pursuing what he ultimately discovered he did not need. The new sound blends grit and authenticity, while Costa’s distinctive voice resonates like a familiar call from an old friend.
