This weekend, Conway, Arkansas, witnessed a thrilling first as it hosted the Arkansas NICA mountain bike competition for the very first time.
The Arkansas NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) event brought together enthusiastic bikers from grades 6 through 12, competing in a showcase of skill and sportsmanship. Among the participants was Seth Theriot, proudly representing the Conway Bearcats. “I’m really proud to be doing this with everybody else. It’s fantastic to meet new people each year,” Theriot commented.
The competition also saw strong representation from the Buffalo Riders of Harrison, Arkansas. Coach Roni Combs expressed her enthusiasm about the event being held in Conway. “We’re having an incredible time. This is our second season, so we’re still quite new to this, but everyone here has made us feel very welcome,” Combs said. She highlighted the organization’s commitment to its members, noting that sponsors provide bikes and scholarships to support those in need.
Terry Coddington, the lead organizer and director for Arkansas NICA, shared the evolution of the event. From humble beginnings with just one group, the organization has expanded to include over a thousand teams statewide. “We view this as youth development on two wheels. Our goal is to get every youth in Arkansas who wants to ride a bike, onto a bike,” Coddington explained. He observed the positive impact of the program on young participants, noting their growth and ability to surpass their limits.
Looking ahead, Coddington confirmed that the competition will return to Conway on September 28th and 29th, promising another exciting weekend for the biking community.
