In an unusual twist of weather, the Sierra region experienced rare summer snowfall on Saturday, August 24, marking the first such event in Palisades Tahoe since 2004. Despite the unseasonable chill, skiing enthusiasts will have to wait as the resort has confirmed that slopes will remain closed for Labor Day.
Maddy Condon, spokesperson for Palisades Tahoe, remarked on the unexpected snow, “It’s still officially summer, but I’m still cold here in both coats.” She emphasized the resort’s readiness for the unpredictable weather, stating, “The Sierras keep us on our toes, and we’re just going to keep going. We’re ready for Mother Nature — whatever she throws at us, we’re ready for it.”
Further south at Mammoth Mountain, the snowfall was evident with a livecam image revealing a gray, snow-capped summit. While the sight of snow in August is a rare and fascinating occurrence, it does not yet signal the start of the skiing season.
Palisades Tahoe has announced that the official opening date for skiing is slated for November 27. “Unfortunately, we will not be opening for Labor Day,” Condon confirmed. However, the resort will be open for gondola rides and a range of activities in the village, offering visitors an alternative way to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
