BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Cacapon State Park is poised to transform into a premier mountain biking destination with a groundbreaking $3.5 million expansion, the largest of its kind in West Virginia’s history. This ambitious project will significantly enhance the park’s trail system, offering mountain bikers an unparalleled experience.

Last week, officials commenced the development, which will introduce 35 miles of expertly crafted mountain bike trails, augmenting the park’s existing 25-mile network. The expansion is slated for completion by 2026, with the initial phase expected to be finished in 2025. The first phase of construction is being managed by Greenstone Trailcraft, a company renowned for its trail design, construction, and maintenance across Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

“This marks an extraordinary milestone for Cacapon Resort and West Virginia as a whole,” stated Brett McMillion, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. “We are thrilled to embark on this significant project, which will enhance the park’s appeal and draw new visitors to our scenic state.”

In addition to the new trails, the expansion will bring a host of new amenities tailored for mountain bikers. The project aims to cater to a diverse range of skill levels, featuring youth-oriented facilities to nurture new talent and a signature trail designed for experienced riders.

Earlier this year, Cacapon State Park earned the 2023 Coalition for Recreational Trails Award for Trail Construction and Design, which helped secure funding from the International Mountain Bicycling Association and the Morgan County Commission for this expansion.

Mark Hoyle, a member of the Cacapon State Park Foundation, praised the collaborative effort behind the project: “This award underscores the incredible teamwork and support from the Cacapon State Park Foundation, volunteers, local officials, and various organizations. Our objective was to not only build exceptional trails but also to establish a mountain biking hub that will benefit the community and create a lasting legacy.”
