A much-anticipated bungee jumping fundraiser, set to benefit Jersey Cheshire Home and Dementia Jersey, has been canceled due to a shortage of volunteers from the local community.
Donna Abel, Chief Executive of Jersey Cheshire Home, expressed deep disappointment over the cancellation, calling it a “terrible shame.”
The event, named Bungee in the Park, was scheduled to take place on Saturday, 7th September, and Sunday, 8th September, at the People’s Park. Its primary goal was to raise much-needed funds for both Jersey Cheshire Home and Dementia Jersey.
However, despite the excitement surrounding the event, the organizers were unable to secure enough participants to cover the costs of hosting the fundraiser.
Two residents of Jersey Cheshire Home, Stanley Baudains (75) and Irene Hamon (76), had eagerly signed up for the challenge, hoping to raise £1,000 each for the charity. Mr. Baudains saw the event as an opportunity to conquer his fear of heights alongside Ms. Hamon, but the cancellation has left both without the chance to take the leap.
Ms. Abel emphasized the significance of such fundraising events, stating, “This event was not just about the thrill, but because we rely on fundraising initiatives like this to continue supporting disabled Islanders and improving their lives.”
Jersey Cheshire Home is the Island’s only residential facility dedicated exclusively to caring for adults with disabilities. The charity relies heavily on donations and fundraising efforts to cover its operating costs, which amount to approximately £8,500 per day.
Similarly, Dementia Jersey provides crucial support to Islanders and their families affected by dementia. Funds raised through events like this help the charity continue offering essential services to those living with dementia on the Island.
The cancellation of Bungee in the Park is a setback for both charities, highlighting the ongoing need for community involvement and support to sustain their vital work.
