Valle d’Aosta, Italy — The stunning Valle d’Aosta region is gearing up to host the Tiro Lead 2024 climbing challenge, a highly anticipated event that will spotlight two new challenging sport climbs at the recently established Cascata Lo Dard crag above Ollomont. The competition, running throughout the summer, features a total prize pool of €1,200 and invites climbers of all levels to participate.
Tiro Lead is renowned for unveiling hidden climbing gems within Italy’s Aosta Valley. Following the successful 2022 event at the “Citta di Uruk” crag in Val Sapin and last year’s challenge at the Barliard crag in Ollomont—where climbers Katia Jacquemod and Mattia Bonomi emerged victorious—the spotlight now shifts to the new crag above Ollomont. This year, climbers will tackle two distinct routes: one designated for women and the other for men, each awaiting its inaugural free ascent.
Competitors have the opportunity to earn rewards for their achievements. The first climber to complete a route will receive €300, while €200 is awarded for the first repeat ascent, and €100 for the second repeat ascent. These prizes apply to both categories.
The new crag, nestled beside the Lo Dard waterfall, was equipped by renowned climbers Massimo Bal and Hervé Vevey. Featuring exceptional rock quality and modern climbing challenges, the site is optimal for summer climbing, benefiting from the waterfall’s cooling effects even on the hottest days. The crag offers 13 routes, including a multi-pitch climb with a maximum grade of 6c. The competition routes are Mosca Bianca for women, with an approximate difficulty of 8a, and Acqualung for men, with a difficulty of 8b—pending final confirmation.
As in previous years, the event is open to all climbers and will continue until the end of the summer. Participants are required to provide video documentation of their climbs, along with photos and a brief report, to [email protected].
The summer climbing season will conclude with a celebratory awards ceremony in October, capping off another exciting chapter in the Tiro Lead series.
